W.A.( Bill) Mooneyham was born on June 15th 1926. Bill has three brothers and three sisters. He went into the Navy in 1944-1946, and married Lucille Didway on August 3rd 1946. They have three daughters and one son and have been married for 66 years. They have lived in the same house and gone to the same church for 58 years. In 1965 he was ordained as a deacon at the Pleasant Valley Free Will Baptist Church. For over 40 years Bill has been a barber at the barbershop at 110 South McKenna, but has been a barber for 64 years. Along with newspaper articles, you can find Bill’s name in the new book ” The Birth of Poteau”.
Bill served in the Navy for 1 year, 9 months, and 8 days. He started at the bottom as Seaman 1st class and worked up to Water Tender 1st class. Working in the boiler room as Assistant Master at Arms on the USS Carter Hall, Bill had to do all the dirty work. He then became a barber in Fort Chaffee during the Korean War. He participated in the initial invasions of Brunei Bay, Borneo in 1945 and the 1945 invasion of Balikpapan, Borneo. In 1948 he got his barber’s license, then in 1949 he got his Masters license. He started barbering in Poteau in the 1960’s, the last 40 of which have been at his current shop. He keeps little pieces of Poteau history in the shop for everyone to look at. Makes for a lot of good conversation pieces! He loves cutting hair and talking with anyone. Stop in and say hello to Bill sometime. It will definitely be worth your time!
